Freedom To a Husband: After his child and wife were sold and shipped away to another state in 1848, Henry Brown resolved to escape slavery by any means necessary. With the help of a free black and white shopkeeper, he hatched a desperate plan to ship himself from Richmond to Philadelphia in a wooden crate
Before the 13 amendment officially abolished slavery in 1865, tens of thousands slaves went to extraordinary lengths to liberate themselves from bondage. Along with using support networks like the underground railroad.
